An experiment by researchers at the University of Amsterdam explored the root cause of social media polarization and echo chambers. The central question was whether these phenomena are primarily driven by platform algorithms or by the fundamental nature of user interactions.
How AI Bots Behaved on a Stripped-Down Social Network
To investigate this, researchers created a custom social media platform devoid of the usual algorithms, ads, and recommendation systems. They populated it with 500 AI chatbots based on GPT-4o mini, each assigned a distinct persona and political viewpoint. The study found that even without algorithmic influence, the AI bots naturally formed echo chambers. They consistently chose to follow and interact with content that aligned with their pre-assigned views, effectively segregating themselves into like-minded groups. Furthermore, the most extreme and biased content generated the most followers and shares.
Conclusions on Polarization and Platform Design
The researchers then tested various interventions to counteract this polarization, such as hiding like/share counts and actively promoting content with opposing views. These methods proved largely ineffective, resulting in a maximum behavioral change of only 6%, and in some cases, even deepening the polarization. The study concludes that the problem is not solely caused by technology or algorithms but is deeply embedded in the way users (or AI models trained on human data) interact. The fundamental structure of social media appears to foster polarization, and while platforms may not create this tendency, they significantly amplify it.
