Scientists Discover Two Natural Substances That May ‘Cleanse’ the Brain

A study from the University of California Irvine has identified a combination of two natural substances that shows promise in rejuvenating brain cells and protecting against neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. The research highlights the potential of using nicotinamide (a form of vitamin B3) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), an antioxidant found in green tea, to support the brain’s natural cleansing processes.

Key Findings

The central finding is that this combination restores energy levels in aging neurons. With age, a molecule called guanosine triphosphate (GTP) declines, impairing the neurons’ ability to function and clear out toxic proteins, such as the beta-amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer’s. In lab tests on neurons from mice with an Alzheimer’s model, the nicotinamide and EGCG mixture restored GTP levels to those of younger mice within 24 hours. This improved the cells’ energy metabolism and ability to remove harmful protein buildups, while also reducing oxidative stress.

Conclusions and Future Research

While these findings are promising and suggest a potential new avenue for slowing cognitive decline with accessible supplements, the research is still in its early stages. Scientists emphasize that further studies are necessary to confirm these effects in humans and to determine effective delivery methods, as oral absorption of nicotinamide can be limited. The discovery provides hope for future therapies but is not yet ready for clinical application.

Mentoring question

Considering this research focuses on natural compounds, how might it influence your personal approach to diet and supplementation for long-term brain health?
