Scientists Say Marijuana Doesn’t Ease Anxiety or Other Mental Health Conditions

Recent analyses of gold-standard research reveal that using medical or recreational marijuana to treat mental health conditions is ineffective. Studies published in Lancet Psychiatry and JAMA found no evidence that cannabis—whether CBD or THC—alleviates symptoms of anxiety, depression, PTSD, or other disorders like bipolar disorder, OCD, and schizophrenia.

The Gap Between Perception and Science

Despite the lack of scientific backing, about half of the 27% of people in the U.S. and Canada who use medical marijuana do so to manage mental health. Furthermore, many U.S. states have approved medical marijuana for these exact conditions, and doctors continue to prescribe it, highlighting a significant disconnect between public policy, patient perception, and clinical evidence.

Risks and Increased Potency

Experts warn that marijuana use for mental health can actually be dangerous rather than beneficial. Regular use, particularly among teens and young adults, can interfere with brain development and is linked to increased risks of self-harm and suicide. For those predisposed to psychotic disorders, cannabis use significantly raises the risk of developing conditions like schizophrenia. This danger is amplified by the skyrocketing potency of modern marijuana. Average THC levels have jumped from around 4% in the 1970s to between 18% and 20% today, with concentrates reaching up to 80%. This dramatic increase in potency has led to higher rates of Cannabis Use Disorder, or marijuana addiction.

Proven Alternatives

Rather than relying on unproven cannabis treatments, mental health experts strongly recommend evidence-based methods. Traditional therapies, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) combined with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), remain the most effective and scientifically supported approaches for managing depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns.
