Beyond the Label: Uncovering the Root Biological Drivers of ADHD

ADHD is often treated as a single, amorphous condition, but it is actually a collection of varied symptoms driven by unique underlying physiological factors. Oxford-educated psychologist Sarah Warley highlights how identifying these biological roots—such as primitive reflexes and biochemical imbalances—can help individuals optimize their brains and move past the struggles of masking.

The Chemistry of ADHD: The Zinc-Copper Balance

Research from the Walsh Institute suggests that a biochemical imbalance between copper and zinc plays a significant role in a large subset of ADHD cases. Copper is a key co-factor in converting dopamine (essential for focus) into noradrenaline. Excess copper and deficient zinc can deplete dopamine levels, causing dysregulation. Managing this balance involves eating protein-rich foods to build neurotransmitters, consuming iron and zinc-rich foods (like red meat, seeds, and shellfish), and avoiding high-sugar foods that cause energy crashes.

The Moro Reflex and Permanent Fight-or-Flight

The Moro reflex is an involuntary infant survival reflex designed to trigger a fight-or-flight response to environmental changes. While this reflex should integrate and disappear by age four months, it can remain ‘stuck’ due to early trauma or birth complications. A retained Moro reflex locks an individual in a constant, subconscious state of stress. Because this response originates in the brain stem, conscious talk therapy cannot resolve it. Instead, precise daily neurodevelopmental exercises are required to stimulate and eventually retire the reflex.

The Invisible Toll of Masking and Rejection Sensitivity

Living with ADHD often involves ‘masking’—putting on a persona to fit into a neurotypical world. This constant compensation comes at a massive invisible cost, leading to burnout, depression, and profound loneliness. This struggle is compounded by Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD). Far from being an overreaction, RSD is often a rational, learned response to experiencing up to 20,000 more critical comments during formative years than neurotypical peers, leaving the nervous system hyper-vigilant to perceived threats.

From Neurodivergent to Neuroextraordinary

Society must shift from expecting neurodivergent individuals to change to valuing the unique advantages they bring. In an era increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence, convergent and analytical thinking can easily be automated. The future will rely on ‘neuroextraordinary’ brains that excel at big-picture thinking, intuitive leaps, and connecting disparate dots. Realizing that ADHD traits are rooted in physiology can help individuals let go of self-blame and embrace their extraordinary potential.
