Maulik Suchak, a lead software engineer at a Magnificent 7 company, shares insights into crafting a résumé effective enough to secure final-round interviews at Google, Meta, Amazon, and Netflix, ultimately leading to his current role. His expertise stems from reviewing hundreds of résumés while co-creating a résumé-building platform, CVsIntellect, and later from his hiring experience.
Suchak attributes his success largely to his résumé’s first impression and highlights five key strategies:
- Show Clear Impact: Focus on quantifiable results and metrics for every bullet point, demonstrating the tangible impact of your work (e.g., “Improved conversion by 2X”).
- Tell a Career Growth Story: Structure the résumé chronologically to show a logical progression in skills, scope, or leadership responsibilities.
- Keep it Concise and Clear: Aim for a one-page résumé. Use short (1-2 lines) bullet points, avoid jargon, and ensure it’s easily scannable, respecting recruiters’ limited time.
- Favor Projects Over Certifications: Emphasize real-world projects (link to GitHub/live examples) demonstrating initiative and technical depth, rather than just listing certifications.
- Ensure Readability and Formatting: Use clean fonts, consistent spacing, clear section headers, and adequate white space for a professional appearance.
While his generic résumé was successful, Suchak acknowledges he could have improved it by highlighting more personal projects and, crucially, tailoring it to each specific job description using relevant keywords to better navigate Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) and potentially reduce rejections.
